Goal-Setting Traps to Avoid Next Year

By Nina East · Comments (0)
Friday, December 17th, 2010

Do you find yourself struggling to achieve your goals?
Do you have trouble maintaining your commitment to your New Year’s resolutions?

Perhaps your difficulties lie in the way you’re setting your goals in the first place.

Rather than setting yourself up for success, you may be setting yourself up for failure in your first step!

There are four very common “goal setting traps” that you may be falling into. These are dangerous mistakes that can make it very difficult for you to accomplish whatever you’re setting out to achieve.

Find greater success with your goals by avoiding these goal-setting traps:

1. Your goals are too vague.
If your goals contain uncertainties, you’ll have difficulty attaining them. Strive to create specific goals. Determine exactly what you want to achieve and attach terms to your goals that are certain and measurable.

Another element of getting clarity around your goals is to ensure they are measurable and timely. There should be a specific point when you can tell that you’ve achieved your goal. “Lose weight” is not measurable, but “Lose 10 pounds” is. “Lose 10 lbs in 90 days” is ideal, because it’s clear, concise, measurable, and has a motivation-driving deadline.

2. Your goals aren’t personal enough. Read More→

5 Tips to Turn Your Plans Into Reality

By Nina East · Comments (0)
Friday, December 10th, 2010

Surely, you have big plans for your future. Since you’re in to personal growth, you have probably had many plans for the future, yes?

The thing is, a plan is just a dream without action to get the ball rolling towards your desired result. It’s time to put your fears and indecisiveness aside and pursue the reality that you know you deserve!
(Keep an eye out for next month’s summary – The Six Styles of Procrastination – for more on the “Dream Procrastinator” style.)

Try these proven tips to help you achieve your dreams:

1.    Know what you want.
Sounds simple, yet sometimes this is the biggest sticking point. It’s easy to identify what you DON’T want, but when it comes to what you DO want, are you crystal clear? Decisiveness leads to success. If you’re fickle about how you see your life in 5 years, or even just 6 months from now, you’ll keep spinning your wheels. Pick the road that is best for you and stick to it!

•    Ensure that your goal directly affects and benefits you. Let others worry about what’s best for them. For example, if you want your daughter to get into your state university because that’s your alma mater, she’s the one that has to make that call. You’re in charge of your own life, and only the decisions that affect you. Read More→

Inspirational Goaling – October self-help book summary now available

By Nina East · Comments (0)
Friday, October 1st, 2010

All new October content is now available in the Members-Only area.

This month’s featured book summary is Inspirational Goaling: How Intuition, Passion & a Taste for Adventure Create Goal Victory When Other Methods Haven’t by Lynn Moore.

IG 232x300 Inspirational Goaling October self help book summary now available

While in Nepal during the spring of 2009, Lynn Moore spent time as a volunteer teaching English to young Buddhists monks, days in the Himalayan Mountains and in the rescue, nurturing and bringing home of an abandoned pup. These experiences combined to bring insight into her decades-long quest for what seemed to be the missing link in the process of achieving our goals.

This, plus the fact that her revelations tie in succinctly with the current shift in consciousness occurring on the planet, motivated her to write this book. Her messages are right in line with the personal growth exploration we are doing at PersonalGrowthPrincess.com.

After reading this self-help book summary you will:

  • Understand how Inspirational Goaling is different from traditional methods of goal setting and achievement.
  • Know how to use purpose, passion, and mission as foundations for goaling.
  • See how right brain and left brain activities affect goaling, and when to use each for maximum benefit.
  • Know three of the most important Universal Laws for inspirational goaling, and how to use them.
  • Learn how becoming aware, not fearful, is the order of the day.

Lynn has also – very generously – provided one of her meditations to Princess members. It’s quite powerful! (You’ll find it in the Member’s area on the Bonus Tools page.)

Denis Boyles, Publisher at Advantage Media Group (www.advantagemediafamily.com) says of this book, “Inspirational Goaling is a timely book. Many people now find themselves at loose ends for one reason or another, and Ms. Moore’s offer of guidance and inspiration–and ways to find and reach the positive goals so many would like to set for themselves–speaks especially clearly to people in this situation. Indeed, for many, her words may seem to be inspirational, literally. The frame of her journey to Nepal, teaching English to young monks and rescuing her beloved pet dog is strong and engaging, and her use of the narrative created by this journey to illustrate her techniques for setting and reaching new goals is wonderful. Ms. Moore successfully draws the reader into her own story, while simultaneously offering encouraging and practical advice and truly inspirational exercises and thought projects”.

Enjoy!

Worry Less, Live More – Michael Beckwith’s ideas on anxiety

By Nina East · Comments (3)
Monday, March 29th, 2010

Like many personal growth princesses, I have use “card decks” to help me set my intentions for the day. You know, the decks of cards with spiritual and inspirational messages. While some people may use them in an effort to “tell the future”, that’s not my focus. Instead, I think of them as “prompts” – to give me an idea or message to focus on for the day, to provide a different perspective than usual. They help me remain more mindful and less scattered.

Lately I’ve been using the Life Lift-Off cards by Michael Beckwith. 414K4liXzTL. SL500 AA300 Worry Less, Live More Michael Beckwiths ideas on anxiety They are a great set. Not stuffy and not woo-woo. Just practical, insightful suggestions for mindfulness.

The other day I drew a card that said “Worry Less, Live More”.

On the Personal Growth Princess home page we use the phrase “Read Less. Grow More”. Like anyone, I like the idea of more for less [superemotions file="icon_smile.gif" title="Smile"]  so this really struck home.

It struck home because, despite my lighthearted, playful, princess attitude, I also tend toward the worry end of the spectrum.

What Michael Beckwith says with this card is that “worry is like paying interest on money you haven’t borrowed yet, and it pays no dividends except more worry.”

How true is that?! Worry begets more worry, which begets more worry, etc. etc.

His suggestion on how to worry less and live more? Stay focused on the Now. Keep your attention on this moment, not what might or might not happen, and express gratitude for your life just as it is. This sets off a cascade of appreciation and positive thoughts, which beget more positive thoughts, which beget more positive thoughts…you know the rest.

Now, be clear. Beckwith and I aren’t saying don’t have goals and don’t dream about or plan for the future. But when the worry bug starts to creep in, shift your attention to NOW, and focus on what you are grateful for.

How do you keep worry at bay? Or, more positively, how do you stay focused on good thoughts? Leave a comment below and let us know!

Beach Money by Jordan Adler [Book Review]

By Nina East · Comments (0)
Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

This 5-Minute Personal Growth Book Review was submitted by guest reviewer, Andrea Kropp.
(I can also personally vouch for this book – I found it so valuable that I photocopied the cover and have it taped to the wall above my desk! – Nina!)

It is an almost must to set aside a portion of your business-building budget for personal development. You might 51%2B9c5ZhubL. SL160 Beach Money by Jordan Adler [Book Review]spend that in any number of ways from CDs, to books, to conferences, to dinner invitations with mentors. What is the purpose of all this stuff? It is continuing education. I’m sure you are aware that teachers, doctors and CPAs all need a certain number of course credits to renew their license each year. If network marketers want to be regarded as professionals, shouldn’t we do the same? If you want generate the type of “walk-away” income that the leaders have, you too need to continually invest in your people skills, mindset and posture.

One of my mentors gave me Jordan Adler’s Beach Money: Creating Your Dream Life Through Network Marketing Beach Money by Jordan Adler [Book Review] book as part of my continuing education. Who can resist the cover image of Jordan reclining on the beach with his laptop unfurled? I could review the whole book, but instead I want to draw out the nuggets that really spoke to me. While this is no substitute for reading it yourself, it will paint a picture of Jordan Adler’s life and key success principles. After you read it for yourself, share it with your downline.

Five Messages in Beach Money: Creating Your Dream Life Through Network Marketing Beach Money by Jordan Adler [Book Review] that Spoke to Me:

1.The Road to Success is Filled with Potholes.
From Beach Money: Jordan Adler failed or quit at 11 network marketing companies before becoming a legend in his current company.
What I took away: Success was always inside of him. Success requires tenacity and devotion. The skills of network marketing take time to acquire and master. The only way to acquire those skills is to keep going. After all, most entrepreneurs in ‘traditional’ business go out of business the first time. Nine out of 10 start-ups fail. Without a few ‘learning experiences’ behind them, many venture capitalists won’t even fund an entrepreneur. Facing, learning from, and moving past adversity is an essential trait in a leader.

2.Multi-Level Marketing is an Investment.
From Beach Money: If your life is yardstick, the time you spend building your network marketing business is only a few inches.
What I took away: This got me thinking about a typical day. The time I devote to reading, listening to CDs, and talking to leaders in my lifetime is very much like the time I spend reading with my kids in any given day. It is a small percent of my whole day, but it will have a lifelong impact and no one can ever take it away from me (or them). Education is always an investment (not a cost). Stop looking at the cost of that book, cost of that conference, cost of that training package and start thinking about how quickly you can apply what you will learn to get the greatest return on your investment.

3.Don’t Just Build a List; Nurture Your List
From Beach Money: Did you know that every business card in your rolodex is worth $100? Jordan will show you that it is with some simple math. Do you treat each card as if it is a $100 bill? Your success it determined by two things…the size of your rolodex and the strength of your relationships with people in that rolodex.
What I took away: My husband summarizes this point exceptionally well. He says, “It’s not about WHAT you know and it’s not about WHO you know. Instead, it’s about WHAT you know ABOUT WHO you know.” So true. Just knowing people is not enough. You have to know ABOUT them – their hobbies, motivation, dreams. If you’ve ever needed to ask for a favor and thought to yourself, “I can’t call that person because…”, start giving to that person, not just taking.

4.Go DO Something…Then Do It Better Next Time
From Beach Money: Jordan’s tip #9 is “Act and Adjust; Don’t Analyze.”
What I took away: As a former scientist, almost all on my early training taught me to analyze and study before taking action. Remember measure twice, cut once? It is essential that network marketers with this tendency become self aware about it. When you do something new will it be just right the first time? No. Perfection is not the goal. The goal is to always get better. You have to take an action before you can improve upon it.

5.Friends and Family Mean Well; Be Grateful for Their Pessimism
From Beach Money: Jordan colorfully relates a Thanksgiving dinner that ended abruptly after a shouting match with his Father about his newest network marketing company.
What I took away: Family and friends have good intentions. They are trying to shield you and in the process don’t realize the damage they may do. I’m a parent. If my sons were involved in something I thought was shady, dishonest or a waste of time, I would try to deter them. It is human nature. It is also human nature that the more they persisted that more I would try to counter. Parents flock and hover to protect their young. So, the next time someone in your immediate family criticizes your choice to pursue network marketing, look at it through a changed lens. See these comments as an expression of love. The best way to love then back is simply to express appreciation for their concern. Try something straightforward like, “Thanks Mom, you are always looking out for me.”

Get Unstuck and Get Going…on the stuff that matters [book review]

By Nina East · Comments (1)
Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

This 5-Minute Personal Growth Book Review was submitted by guest reviewer, Terri Zwierzynski.

First thing I noticed about Get Unstuck and Get Going, by Michael Bungay Stanier is it’s not really a book! It’s not something you sit down and read cover-to-cover – in fact I don’t even know how you would go about doing that, because the format is so unique. I was reminded of a learning tool I bought for my children to help them learn to spell simple words, where all the letters of the alphabet are arranged in 4 columns and they flip them until they get the right letters lined up. Except in this book, the columns are rows, and they contain three intriguing sets of tools full of awesome wisdom in easily absorbable “bites”.

The first tool is a set of 50 inspiring stories. Little real-life bites, some familiar, others obscure, but all emotionally powerful. The second is a set of provocative quotes. (I’m a sucker for quotes so this is my favorite section!) The third is called Powerful Models, and contains various simple but potent human dynamics models. So when you are stuck, you can open this book and flip through the various combinations (125,000 of them!) to find one or more that shakes loose your thinking, inspires you to action, or simply helps you let go of something that is holding you back. Plus there is a simple template called the Action Acceleration(tm) sheet that guides you through the process quickly and easily (you can download the sheets online, also.)

Taking Action – Do Deadlines Really Work?

By Nina East · Comments (0)
Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

All of us, even with the best of intentions, fail to take action on things, even when we’ve said it is really really important. Why is that?

In an ideal world, our behavior would be based on our values – what we say is important to us. But that’s not always how it works, is it? I can really value and want a clean house, but that doesn’t mean I’ll actually get out the broom and Windex.

What does get me to clean my house?

Company.

Sound familiar? Company is coming over for dinner, and boy can I go into a whirlwind of cleaning, straightening, and cramming things in the closet so they’ll be out of sight. runninghorses Taking Action Do Deadlines Really Work?moz screenshot Taking Action Do Deadlines Really Work?

But WHY do we clean our house at that point in time when we could have cleaned it last weekend rather than snuggling up with the latest romance novel? Because all of a sudden it has become URGENT!

Human behavior almost always depends on urgency. That doesn’t have to mean urgency of a dire or catastrophic nature. It can be the simple urgency of friends coming over to visit in 20 minutes…and you with a messy house.

Knowing that urgency has a significant affect on our behavior, and that implicit in reading this post, there is something about yourself or your behavior you would like to change, you can design your environment to support you.

One way to do that is to manufacture urgency…in the form of  Deadlines.

The D word.

Why do deadlines work so well – even when it is outside the work situation?

Are you a Doer or a Dabbler?

By Nina East · Comments (0)
Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

What’s the difference between doing and dabbling?

Seems a bit silly to ask that, doesn’t it? After all, everybody knows the difference, right?
Well, perhaps not so much…

Dabblers are people who “try” something out. They think about it, maybe take a teensy bit of action, but always have a reason they don’t fully commit. They don’t have time, they don’t have money, they aren’t sure, they aren’t sure if it will work…

Doers, on the other hand, well…Do. They make a decision and then take action. They may not get exactly what they want, but by DOING, they are at least moving in the direction they want, and can make course corrections along the way.

Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of places where it makes sense to dabble to your heart’s content – hobbies, entertainment, maybe even gardening (depending on your penchant for beautiful flowers or healthy vegetables), etc. I’m sure you can think of many places in your life where it makes sense to dabble.

But the question is, are you dabbling where you ought to be doing?
If you don’t like the word “ought”, ask yourself if you are getting the results you want in a particular area. If not, are you dabbling there, or have you truly committed, past the “trying” stage? Are you taking consistent action toward what you want?

For me, the distinction between doer and dabbler was a mind-altering one. Read More→

Your mind is not your friend

By Nina East · Comments (2)
Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

Pretty odd thought, isn’t it? And I bet your mind doesn’t want to think it, either!

Matthew Ferry, a personal growth professional, describes your mind as being like a drunk monkey – that obnoxious drunk, never stops chattering, always on your back, voice. He also points out that your mind’s only goal is to survive. In other words, your mind’s goal isn’t to make you better, help you achieve, break through old patterns. Instead, your mind’s only function is to help you to survive, and it does this by making sure you don’t do anything too unfamiliar or “scary”.

If that’s the case, your mind isn’t helping you reach your goals, dreams and desires, because, by definition, all of those are located outside what is familiar.

The drunk monkey (your mind) is obsessed with the past. It goes over it again and again and again.
Sound familiar???

Your mind is willing to focus on the past because at least it is familiar (familiar = safe), even if it’s not enjoyable or what you want.

As you’ll see on the video, Matthew says we need to shift from a past-based mindset and begin to operate from the future – that that’s where the inspiration is. It means doing something unfamiliar, uncomfortable – and making it the “new” familiar in the process. Sort of like brown is the new black or 40 is the new 30, maybe “new” is the new “familiar”. Cool, huh?

Watch Matthew’s video and listen to his humorous approach to this pretty significant issue we all face. Then check out his site.  And remember, goals are designed to fix your broken life. What would you focus on to inspire your Great life?

What would happen if you simply used your mind as a tool, rather than thinking of it as “who you are”?
