Beach Money by Jordan Adler [Book Review]

By Nina East · Comments (0)
Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

This 5-Minute Personal Growth Book Review was submitted by guest reviewer, Andrea Kropp.
(I can also personally vouch for this book – I found it so valuable that I photocopied the cover and have it taped to the wall above my desk! – Nina!)

It is an almost must to set aside a portion of your business-building budget for personal development. You might 51%2B9c5ZhubL. SL160 Beach Money by Jordan Adler [Book Review]spend that in any number of ways from CDs, to books, to conferences, to dinner invitations with mentors. What is the purpose of all this stuff? It is continuing education. I’m sure you are aware that teachers, doctors and CPAs all need a certain number of course credits to renew their license each year. If network marketers want to be regarded as professionals, shouldn’t we do the same? If you want generate the type of “walk-away” income that the leaders have, you too need to continually invest in your people skills, mindset and posture.

One of my mentors gave me Jordan Adler’s Beach Money: Creating Your Dream Life Through Network Marketing Beach Money by Jordan Adler [Book Review] book as part of my continuing education. Who can resist the cover image of Jordan reclining on the beach with his laptop unfurled? I could review the whole book, but instead I want to draw out the nuggets that really spoke to me. While this is no substitute for reading it yourself, it will paint a picture of Jordan Adler’s life and key success principles. After you read it for yourself, share it with your downline.

Five Messages in Beach Money: Creating Your Dream Life Through Network Marketing Beach Money by Jordan Adler [Book Review] that Spoke to Me:

1.The Road to Success is Filled with Potholes.
From Beach Money: Jordan Adler failed or quit at 11 network marketing companies before becoming a legend in his current company.
What I took away: Success was always inside of him. Success requires tenacity and devotion. The skills of network marketing take time to acquire and master. The only way to acquire those skills is to keep going. After all, most entrepreneurs in ‘traditional’ business go out of business the first time. Nine out of 10 start-ups fail. Without a few ‘learning experiences’ behind them, many venture capitalists won’t even fund an entrepreneur. Facing, learning from, and moving past adversity is an essential trait in a leader.

2.Multi-Level Marketing is an Investment.
From Beach Money: If your life is yardstick, the time you spend building your network marketing business is only a few inches.
What I took away: This got me thinking about a typical day. The time I devote to reading, listening to CDs, and talking to leaders in my lifetime is very much like the time I spend reading with my kids in any given day. It is a small percent of my whole day, but it will have a lifelong impact and no one can ever take it away from me (or them). Education is always an investment (not a cost). Stop looking at the cost of that book, cost of that conference, cost of that training package and start thinking about how quickly you can apply what you will learn to get the greatest return on your investment.

3.Don’t Just Build a List; Nurture Your List
From Beach Money: Did you know that every business card in your rolodex is worth $100? Jordan will show you that it is with some simple math. Do you treat each card as if it is a $100 bill? Your success it determined by two things…the size of your rolodex and the strength of your relationships with people in that rolodex.
What I took away: My husband summarizes this point exceptionally well. He says, “It’s not about WHAT you know and it’s not about WHO you know. Instead, it’s about WHAT you know ABOUT WHO you know.” So true. Just knowing people is not enough. You have to know ABOUT them – their hobbies, motivation, dreams. If you’ve ever needed to ask for a favor and thought to yourself, “I can’t call that person because…”, start giving to that person, not just taking.

4.Go DO Something…Then Do It Better Next Time
From Beach Money: Jordan’s tip #9 is “Act and Adjust; Don’t Analyze.”
What I took away: As a former scientist, almost all on my early training taught me to analyze and study before taking action. Remember measure twice, cut once? It is essential that network marketers with this tendency become self aware about it. When you do something new will it be just right the first time? No. Perfection is not the goal. The goal is to always get better. You have to take an action before you can improve upon it.

5.Friends and Family Mean Well; Be Grateful for Their Pessimism
From Beach Money: Jordan colorfully relates a Thanksgiving dinner that ended abruptly after a shouting match with his Father about his newest network marketing company.
What I took away: Family and friends have good intentions. They are trying to shield you and in the process don’t realize the damage they may do. I’m a parent. If my sons were involved in something I thought was shady, dishonest or a waste of time, I would try to deter them. It is human nature. It is also human nature that the more they persisted that more I would try to counter. Parents flock and hover to protect their young. So, the next time someone in your immediate family criticizes your choice to pursue network marketing, look at it through a changed lens. See these comments as an expression of love. The best way to love then back is simply to express appreciation for their concern. Try something straightforward like, “Thanks Mom, you are always looking out for me.”

Get Unstuck and Get Going…on the stuff that matters [book review]

By Nina East · Comments (1)
Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

This 5-Minute Personal Growth Book Review was submitted by guest reviewer, Terri Zwierzynski.

First thing I noticed about Get Unstuck and Get Going, by Michael Bungay Stanier is it’s not really a book! It’s not something you sit down and read cover-to-cover – in fact I don’t even know how you would go about doing that, because the format is so unique. I was reminded of a learning tool I bought for my children to help them learn to spell simple words, where all the letters of the alphabet are arranged in 4 columns and they flip them until they get the right letters lined up. Except in this book, the columns are rows, and they contain three intriguing sets of tools full of awesome wisdom in easily absorbable “bites”.

The first tool is a set of 50 inspiring stories. Little real-life bites, some familiar, others obscure, but all emotionally powerful. The second is a set of provocative quotes. (I’m a sucker for quotes so this is my favorite section!) The third is called Powerful Models, and contains various simple but potent human dynamics models. So when you are stuck, you can open this book and flip through the various combinations (125,000 of them!) to find one or more that shakes loose your thinking, inspires you to action, or simply helps you let go of something that is holding you back. Plus there is a simple template called the Action Acceleration(tm) sheet that guides you through the process quickly and easily (you can download the sheets online, also.)

Taking Action – Do Deadlines Really Work?

By Nina East · Comments (0)
Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

All of us, even with the best of intentions, fail to take action on things, even when we’ve said it is really really important. Why is that?

In an ideal world, our behavior would be based on our values – what we say is important to us. But that’s not always how it works, is it? I can really value and want a clean house, but that doesn’t mean I’ll actually get out the broom and Windex.

What does get me to clean my house?

Company.

Sound familiar? Company is coming over for dinner, and boy can I go into a whirlwind of cleaning, straightening, and cramming things in the closet so they’ll be out of sight. runninghorses Taking Action Do Deadlines Really Work?moz screenshot Taking Action Do Deadlines Really Work?

But WHY do we clean our house at that point in time when we could have cleaned it last weekend rather than snuggling up with the latest romance novel? Because all of a sudden it has become URGENT!

Human behavior almost always depends on urgency. That doesn’t have to mean urgency of a dire or catastrophic nature. It can be the simple urgency of friends coming over to visit in 20 minutes…and you with a messy house.

Knowing that urgency has a significant affect on our behavior, and that implicit in reading this post, there is something about yourself or your behavior you would like to change, you can design your environment to support you.

One way to do that is to manufacture urgency…in the form of  Deadlines.

The D word.

Why do deadlines work so well – even when it is outside the work situation?

Is Dr. Phil a Personal Growth Princess?

By Nina East · Comments (0)
Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

On his show today, Dr. Phil made a statement 100% in line with the mission of Personal Growth Princess.

If being half of a couple means you have to be less than all of who you are, the cost is too high.

– Dr. Phil

The mission of Personal Growth Princess, in basic terms, is to help women be completely full of themselves.

DrPhil Is Dr. Phil a Personal Growth Princess?

Princess Dr. Phil?

Not in a smart-alecky, “you’re too big for your britches” way, but in a “who else would your rather be full of?” sort of way. Women spend a lot of time squelching who they are – their greatness, as well as what they perceive to be weaknesses.

Showing up as less than who you are is always a disaster. And quite frankly, it’s dishonest and disrespectful – to yourself and to the other people in your life. That doesn’t mean you have to be perfect. Au contraire! Being FULL of you, all of who you are, means showing up, frizzy hair, warts and all.

I doubt Dr. Phil would ever think of himself as a princess – and would probably have a great folksy quip in response – but it’s obvious he is a prince after our own hearts.

What do you think?

Know of any other unlikely (unsuspecting?) Princesses out there?

New Year Calls for New…What?

By Nina East · Comments (0)
Saturday, January 2nd, 2010

This time of year personal growth professionals, bosses, friends, family, even Nancy Neighbor down the street, will ask you what your New Year’s Resolutions are and how you’re going to keep them. Implicit in this are 3 things:

  • You should have New Year’s Resolutions.
  • You should have more than one.
  • And that you should keep them.

I wonder…could this all be much ado about nothing?
Do you really need to have New Year’s Resolutions? If it’s a requirement, it must be because they are effective. Hmmm…. I suspect it’s more that it has become habit.

And who said you had to have more than one. Goodness knows we have enough on our plates as it is!

How resolved are people to keep their resolutions? At first, to a great deal, but it generally wanes – as anyone who has lamented about the parking difficulty at the gym in the month of January, only to be elated when it’s easy again half way through February.

I quit making resolutions a long time ago. It turns out I was just resurrecting the same old resolutions, and obviously getting nowhere. A great mechanism if your goal is “how can I make myself feel even worse this year”

Of course, this time of year is a good one for planning. In the northern hemisphere, Winter with its pending Spring brings forth all kinds of growthful thoughts. In the southern hemisphere, the turn of the new year, the slow movement from the fullness of Summer to the harvest of Fall has you thinking of what you have sown – is it enough, do I need to do more/better/different next year in order to reap more?

So, given it is a natural time for planning, I humbly suggest we think in terms of EVOLUTIONS rather than resolutions.

After all, we are changing and evolving all the time. (And, of course, that’s what Personal Growth Princess is all about.) It’s important to honor that it goes on all year. It’s a way of validating who we are, what we’ve learned, and how we’re using it today.

One of the things I am evolving this year are my beliefs and my rituals, which according to neuro-scientists, are closely linked.
To the outside world I look like I’ve got it all, that life is great, and I’m a huge success. While some of that is true – more at some times than others – it’s also true that I put up with quite a bit that bugs me. Like the rear windshield wiper in my car that works when it wants to, which is generally not when it’s raining.

I’m developing a worksheet to help princesses, me included, to start doing less of this, and having more of what we want. In the meantime, I’m developing some new beliefs, and have a handy ritual to help reinforce it.

One of my new beliefs is that “There is always a way to have it the way I want it.”   haveit New Year Calls for New...What?

The picture at the right is a quick graphic I created to help me remember just that. There IS always a way to have it the way I want it.

The graphic actually comes from an inspirational video I created for myself. I shared it in an earlier post, but haven’t been using it as I planned.

So that’s the new ritual…to watch the video every morning as part of my morning ritual. Just so you know, I created this specifically for me, so it has pictures of me and uses my own handwriting. My guess is you’ll want to create one for yourself. One the page with the video is a link to the person who taught me how to do this. (If you have powerpoint or something similar, it’s really pretty easy.)

So…think Evolution, not resolution.
What evolved for you in 2009, and what are you evolving in 2010? Comment below and let me know.

Happy Evolution!

Being a Personal Growth Master

By Nina East · Comments (0)
Friday, November 20th, 2009

What does it take to master something?

In the book Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell studied what it takes to become masterful – at anything. What is surprising is how little talent and luck have to do with whether someone becomes a world class expert – regardless of the field they are in.

You may not be interested in becoming known as an expert in something, but there are things you would like to be able to do extremely well. There are areas you would like to master. My guess is that “personal growth” falls into this category somewhere. Not that anyone can really become a master at personal growth (I don’t even know what they might mean), but you can become an expert on yourself…and on who you are becoming. In fact, part of the reason you have been drawn to this site, or become a member, is that you want to find ways to gain knowledge, experience, and insights that are meaningful.

While natural talent or affinity affects whether you end up being drawn to a particular field – such as, if you have a natural talent for playing the piano or speaking in public, you may have been drawn to fields that require those skills without thinking about it – but talent or affinity will not determine whether you are a “success” at either. And though opportunity and luck play a role in who you get exposed to as you make your way toward mastery, even people with the same talent and same opportunity don’t achieve the same level of mastery. Talent and luck are not enough.

The key distinction, according to Gladwell, Read More→

Are you a Doer or a Dabbler?

By Nina East · Comments (0)
Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

What’s the difference between doing and dabbling?

Seems a bit silly to ask that, doesn’t it? After all, everybody knows the difference, right?
Well, perhaps not so much…

Dabblers are people who “try” something out. They think about it, maybe take a teensy bit of action, but always have a reason they don’t fully commit. They don’t have time, they don’t have money, they aren’t sure, they aren’t sure if it will work…

Doers, on the other hand, well…Do. They make a decision and then take action. They may not get exactly what they want, but by DOING, they are at least moving in the direction they want, and can make course corrections along the way.

Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of places where it makes sense to dabble to your heart’s content – hobbies, entertainment, maybe even gardening (depending on your penchant for beautiful flowers or healthy vegetables), etc. I’m sure you can think of many places in your life where it makes sense to dabble.

But the question is, are you dabbling where you ought to be doing?
If you don’t like the word “ought”, ask yourself if you are getting the results you want in a particular area. If not, are you dabbling there, or have you truly committed, past the “trying” stage? Are you taking consistent action toward what you want?

For me, the distinction between doer and dabbler was a mind-altering one. Read More→

Famous Failures…how do you deal with adversity?

By Nina East · Comments (0)
Friday, October 30th, 2009

I ran across this video the other day…full of poignant examples of how someone else’s opinion or assessment of you doesn’t really matter.

Adversity is a peculiar thing. For some people it is the call to action, the call to step up and do the unexpected. To others it is the slap that knocks us flat.

Which is it for you? Chances are it’s a little bit of both, depending on what else is happening for you. If your environment is an invalidating one, you’ll lean toward the being-knocked-flat side. If it’s validating and empowering, you may feel like you can leap tall buildings in a single bound.

What this video demonstrates is that it’s what inside YOU that matters. You get to choose what you pay attention to and what influences you.

I know you’ve heard that before, yes? Perhaps all you need is a compelling picture.

Validation – a basic human need few of us get enough of…

By Nina East · Comments (1)
Monday, September 14th, 2009

One of the biggest sources of low self-esteem is feeling or being invalidated by others or by your environment.  Many people say you shouldn’t rely on getting validated by external sources. While this is  nice in theory, the truth is, when external sources invalidate you, it can be devastating. And if you live with this on a daily basis, it can be overwhelming to overcome.

You might feel invalidated in your relationship by a partner who doesn’t appreciate you…or by your boss who always points out what you do wrong, not what you do right…or by your kids who feel entitled and let you know on a regular basis that you aren’t delivering to them…

Wherever it comes from, it hurts.
On the flip side, Validation can be just as powerful, in positive ways.
Here is a great video about the power of validation, the struggles everyone has with being invalidated, and how you never know how or where you’ll be blessed as a result of validating others. It’s cute and fun, and packs a wallop of a message.

So where do you get your validation from?
And who have you validated recently? Hmmm….
